Evinrude VRO Questions

I just bought a boat with a 1990 40HP Evinrude with VRO. Specifically the boat is a Lowe flat bottomed bass boat if that helps. Three questions.

1. The oil tank is held down with some sort of twist/spring things. At first the twist/spring things looked like thumb screws, but apparently not so. So how do I unattatch the tank. The fill hole is trapped under the edge of the deck, so it has to come out to fill it.

2. The primer squeeze bulb is a little stiff, but does not appear to get truely hard like the gas primer bulbs do. It reminds me of a stiff gas primer bulb. Is that normal. The only two VRO systems I have looked at both had similar feeling bulbs.

3. When I first start the engine I get a quick peep out of the alarm horn. I assume that the alarm horn is working. Is there anything else that I should check as far as verifying that the VRO portion of the alarm is working correctly.

There were two oil tanks that year. One used regular nuts on the hold down bracket on the top of the oil tank. The other used a j-bar with a type of T handle on the top. Looks like you just move the T handle outboard (out of the slot) to disengage. Possible that the oil line bulb is getting old. It is replaceable, along with the line from the bulb to the engine. It is a special hose, and bulb, 1/4 inch, yellow markings on the side of the hose. A properly functioning alarm will beep briefly each time the key is turned on, as a self test. This is normal. There is a small whitish connector under the cowl. This is the connector where the oil hose from the tank connects to the fuel pump. This is like a sight glass and will show a darker color when the oil flows through it. If you ever disconnect the oil hose, you must prime the hose full of oil, then connect to this sight glass. Be sure it discolors to indicate that oil is flowing shortly after startup. If you have concerns about the oil consumption you can temporarily put oil in the gas and mark the oil tank. If the oil level recedes in the tank, you know the pump is properly mixing oil and you can discontinue putting oil directly in the gas.

sounds good, the bulb is 18 years old time to replace. as far as the fastener, no idea, but i would relocate, the tank when you get it loose, so it can be serviced without hassle.

Just pull up on each white T-handle which compresses the spring, then move it off to the side. The black cover on the oil tank has a recess for the T-handle and a slot to remove it.
