Evinrude vs Johnson shop manual

I have a 1967 Johnson 100HP outboard. Bought a Seloc manual for it last year and I'm tired of the lack of help that it provides. Looked at ebay for an official shop manual and there is not one for a Johnson. However, there is a shop manual for a 100HP 1967 Evinrude. Is the only difference in the two brands the motor cover? Will the Evinrude shop manual be helpful or should I wait for a Johnson-specific manual?

Thanks,

I think the basic motors are the same, the evinrude manual should work for you. Having said that, I am sure someone with more knowledge than I will chime in with some advice.

On my manual the top of the cover says Johnson outboards.
At the bottom its says Evinrude outboards.

It should state OMC.
It should be specific to your model number.

The front cover shows 1967 Evinrude Service Manual Starflite 100HP Models 100783. At the bottom in smaller print it says copyright OMC 1967.

I want to do a link and synch and all the posts on here say I need the shop manual. So will the 60s shop manual help me, or not any more than a Seloc?

Re: Evinrude vs Johnson shop manual

From what I have learned here at this forum, there is a difference.

Evinrude was designed to start on the first pull.
Johnson was designed to start on the third pull.

Rebuilding a Johnson with a Evinrude manual just wouldn't be fair.

....... Really most manuals say Evinrude/Johnson.....

For that, it will. The Solec sucks, dont get me wrong.
With an original, it'll be in black an white, with small grainy 3x3 pictures. And only mention obsolete test equipment. And tell you to use 'Tool 3465432" and to use obsolete oil/sealant/lubricant types.

At lease the Solec references a multimeter, tells you an equivalent tool to use, and the equivalent oil type.

Re: Evinrude vs Johnson shop manual

After asking the seller I found out the manual is 93 pages. That seems short for a shop manual. Any thoughts?

Shouldn't the shop manual have more than 93 pages?

Re: Evinrude vs Johnson shop manual

My OMC manual for '81 70-75 HP motors has about 93 "pages" but with printing on both sides making it 186 printed pages. Perhaps the seller simply counted the number of sheets of paper? With the manual divided into nine sections you can't just look at the last page for a page count.

"In 1956 OMMC (Outboard Marine and Manufacturing) changed its name again to OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation). By this time both Evinrude and Johnson Outboard motors had interchangeable parts."

Great! Thanks for the confirmation. I will put a bid in on eBay so that I can have a good shop manual.

Thanks,
