I'm buying a boat and ITs down to two boats and I would like your opinions on the motor they each have.
A 96 Evinrude 48 hp vs a 95 Mercury 40 hp

The Mercury has oil injection and the Evinrude has the oil mixed in the gas.

Any thoughts would be helpful
I have a 57 Evinrude Fastwin and love it but Ive only had the one motor so I m not being objective.

Thank you

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury

Hi Dennis.

I have owned a '92 Merc 40HP and like how it ran smoothly and was good for trolling.
Never had a problem with Oil-injected Merc as they use a drive system that's pretty dependable. And I hate mixing oil........

Nothing bad to say about the 'Rude. I've owned a couple but was always a little leary of their VRO system.
Looks like somebody bypassed it, so not to worry.
Others will have opposite and varied opinions.

If I was you, pick the motor with good, even compression numbers that run and starts the easiest.

Good Luck. CF

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury

if that merc 40 is a 4 cylinder get that without hesitation if its in good shape. I own a 1992 merc 40 4 cylinder 2 carb like canadian is talking about and its one of the best engines of have ever owned without a question.

its unbeliveably smooth (nearly as smooth as my merc v-6) due to the 4 cylinder design, great for trolling, and wow is it ever quiet. i had a guy the other day ask me if it was a fourstroke its that quiet.

Not to mention, most people regard the 4 cylinder 2 carb merc engine to be one of if not the most reliable and bulletproof outboard engine ever made. In my eyes, you can't go wrong with it.

I've had 2 Merc 500s very sililar to your 40.Excellent motors. My only thought is the Evinrude is a little easier to work on for the home mechanic.

Although it might not be an issue in your neck of the woods...I'd also consider proximity to a decent dealership.

Where I live we have several Merc dealers, but only one Evinrude dealer (that isn't very helpful). Next closest Evinrude dealer is about 3 hours away, so not very convenient.

Cheers.

Both motors are fine. Maybe not as quiet or smooth as the Merc, the evinrude is a very reliable proven motor. There are tons of them running around....Just so you don't get the impression they are no good....

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury

I agree on the smoothness of the 4 cyl Merc. It's like driving a 2 cycle 8 cyl vs 4 cyl for smoothness.

BUTTTTTTTTT the Merc is still crossflow if it's a 4 cyl 40 so you will not get the fuel efficiency that you will with the OMC. It IS a looper; a 2 cylinder version of the 3 cylinder they pioneered back in '68 which revolutionized boating by it's power to weight ratio and fuel economy.......and if you don't believe it's magic, look at all the catalogs of all the mfgr's in the world, and in 2 cycle engines, try to find one that's not loop charged. Rest my case and there is a Merc on my boat (looped. 8)

Re: Evinrude vs Mercury

what are your plans for the boat? The rude 48hp isn't going to be that great of an engine for trolling since its a big twin and doesn't like to idle down low smoothly. My 55hp and brother-in-law's 84' 60hp OMC twins will only idle down to 800rpm smoothly which pushed our 16 foot boats too fast for most kinds of fishing. Lots of torque though when you push the happy lever and they have a 2.41 gear ratio spinning 12" props where as most 2 stroke 50's swing 11" props.
