Evinrude 175 Outboard Alarm/Tachometer Problem

Engine ran good at 4000 rpm for 45 minutes, then heard single warning beep (like the low oil sound), but the sound was sporadic and seemed to coincide with the bounce of the chop on the water. Oil level was fine and 4000 rpms could be maintained. Alarm then began to sound erratically several times a minute, then became a continuous sound like the overheat alarm. Therms were not hot and temp gauge read normal. I replaced the sender for the overheat alarm, thinking that it was just a malfunction of the sender unit.

Next day, again ran good for 45 minutes at high rpm, then got the same problem, now noticed that the tachometer was not working (reading zero at high rpms). I noticed that the alarm “beep” triggers a jump in the tachometer, which then goes back to reading zero. Tachometer seems to work at idle. I’m thinking there is a wire problem somewhere with the tachometer and the warning alarm, but have no clue where it is.
Any thoughts?

Or, if I'm wrong, is this a fuel restriction or a VRO problem? Thanks much.
