I have a friend I ran into over the weekend that asked me a question about a boat he just got. He knows I do most of my own work. I don't have a lot of info so the question is just general in nature. He was given a boat that sat for quite a while. He said it was a bass boat with a 90 evinrude. He says it starts right up. What bothers him is the water does not come out of the telltale right away. He says it runs for a little while and he will hear something click or clunk and then the water starts coming out with a good stream. Most motors I have worked on usually flow water pretty quick although I worked on an older Mercury a while back that did something similar. Is this normal? I have recommended to him that since he doesn't know the history too much that it would be a good idea to change the water pump and the lower gear oil anyway. Thanks for any info, I wont be able to go look at it for him until next week.

Yeah Ed it sounds like you have given him good advice. My Merc 650 takes 4 or 5 seconds to start peeing.

Sutor,

Thats what I would do. The thing that has me puzzled is that he said it runs for a while and then it makes a click noise and that is when the water comes out. I don't know how long it has to run or what the click sounds like so I can only guess until I get over there and check it out. Sounds like a relay opens a valve, but I don't know of any motors set up like that. Especially a smaller horsepower.

Hmm, and I have never "heard" a thermostat open. But there are some motors that do not flow water until the thermostat opens. Maybe that is all it is.
