So, we can guess that the harness is not correct for the motor? Can we even guess that both halves of the plug are red??? Or not. If not, the "wires in" may not match up with the "wires out". If my guesses are correct, you have to get color blind. All that counts is where the wires come from and where they go. Here is what is required:
1. A wire from one of the big terminals on the starter solenoid (the one with the battery cable attached), leading to the "BAT" terminal on the key switch. Should pass through a fuse along the way.
2. A wire from one of the small terminals on the solenoid, leading to the "S" terminal on the key switch. The other small terminal on the solenoid goes to the safety switch (or possibly grounded)
3. A wire from the electric choke leading to the choke switch (or the "C" terminal on the key switch if you have a push key-to-choke switch).
4. Two wires (1-ea) from the external coils leading to the two "M" terminals on the key switch.
5. If you have a separate choke switch, a jumper wire from the "A" terminal on the key switch leading to the other terminal on the choke switch.
6. There are no "ground" wires at the key switch on that motor.
If you paid attention to all this, you will notice there are a minimum of 5 wires required---not 4.
