Evinrude won’t start

Hi, 1986 Evinrude v4 90Hp, any idea why this motor takes a long time to start when is cold, only the 1st start of the day after that will run excellent and I can shut-it off for 5 hours and will start right up. Any idea why is doing that? or is that typical on these motors. <br />Thank you

Eula....take a look on the engine for the primer solenoid. It will have a little red lever on it. Before the next start up, move the red lever clockwise (I think) as far as it will go. Start the engine in the normal way except don't push the key to choke. If the engine starts, then you have a problem with the primer solenoid.<br /><br />The primer solenoid shoots fuel into the throat of the carb for cold starts. The red lever it the manual operate for the solenoid.<br /><br />You may also want to look around for any hose from the primer that may be broke. Have you noticed any gas smell or raw fuel laying about?<br /><br />Keep us posted...thanks.

Hi, when I move the red lever clockwise as far as it will go. I try to Start the motor and It won’t start, I then move the lever to where it goes and I push the key in to start and it will start fast, but then will go off fast, (on my control I have a lever that will go up and Down if I leave that lever in the down position the motor will never start, even if I used the prime solenoid, if I bring the lever up half-way it will start if I used the prime solenoid but will go off fast, then I try it ageing with the lever all the way up without using the prime solenoid and it will start but I have to play with the lever up and down until the motor stay running by itself. After that motor will run all day without any problems, I usually go fishing for about 5 to 6 hours and the motor start really fast with the prime solenoid. It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes to start the boat on the ramp. People get really upset at me on the ramp; it is a really busy ramp. Some one told me on the Ramp that the carb are getting to much fuel and that is way it take to long to start the motor but I don’t know <br />Thank you

Are you pumping up the primer bulb firm before that first start of the day? Pump the bulb up, raise the fast idle lever to halfway and start the engine. You may have to bump the key in and out a few times until it smooths out. You may also try richening your low speed screws a bit. Turn each one out 1/8 of a turn and see what results you get. If better, turn them another 1/8 turn until it runs well cold. It may also be that you need to lean them out a bit. A good place to start the screws at is 2 turns out from lightly seated position and go from there.
