Hello Everyone.
I have a 1977 85 evinrude. It has been idle for several years. I can not keep it running. It will not start on it's own but if I squirt gas into the carbs. it will go for about 3 seconds and quit. It has good compresion, about 125lbs. New plugs, fresh fuel, and a good hot spark. I went through the carbs. and made sure they were clean. needle and seat work correctly. I checked fuel lines and filter. Carbs have fuel in the bowls, but it still seems no fuel is getting sucked in to the engine. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Hi, Raymond.

Welcome aboard. :)

You may not have cleared the orifices from the jets into the carb throats. Sounds like all four are plugged.

Good luck. :)

Hi Ray,

Sounds like the carbs need a more thorough going through. Take care to clean out all the passages with carb. cleaner and blow them out with compressed air. Make sure the float is set level (Parallel) when inverted. If it runs with a shot of fuel in the the carb. throat, it can only be resricted in the carb itself..

if it has sat that long, you better check the impeller. and not burn it up.

A couple of things come to mind.
1. Fuel pump
2. Try a different fuel tank
3. Finally, as a last resort, pull the carbs and check the reeds. Make sure no trash is keeping one or more stuck open, and that they seal off good.

Here is a carb video that might help. Just click on the link and then on the video link.

web page

I would think if it runs with fuel sprayed into the carb, then stops,it's a carb problem,no matter what service has been done.

If you keep spraying fuel into the carb, will it run longer ?

DHP

Thanks.
It was a carb. problem just like everyone said. I would never have known about the two jets at the bottom of each bowl without your help. This was my first question on here and I got a lot of responses. I even got a shematic and a video. Unbelieveable. Thanks again!
