Folks,

I am posting for a friend that does not have internet access. He has an 95 Evinrude 15hp.

This motor was stored (improperly) for 6 years before he got it. He has re-built the carbs, and is now replacing fuel lines.

After he rebuilt carbs, ran fine for a while now won't idle. Marina sold him some de-carb and he has also messed with the idle screws. Adjusted idle screws to try and fix idle problem.

Any and all ideas on how to get this back to "perfect" running would be welcome. He has cleaned it up nicely and everything looks good. Drained the tank, etc.

What is the best way to re-set idle to proper settings.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Peace.

emp.

Re: Evinrude Won't Idle properly

Ed I'd think if he cleaned the carb and it idled good for a while and then didn't idle, he should go back and redo the carb. This time maybe soaking it out in carb cleaner and then blowing out the passages with compressed air. And if he didn't put a new kit in it, he should do so.

Rough setting for the low speed needle is about two and a half turns out. Should get it started and ge it up to temp.

Also be warry of the engine temp. Setting so long, the water pump impeller has probably taken set and may not pump long at low end rpms.

OBJ,

Thanks much, will pass this on, I am also recommending to him he get the shop manual, he has a Clymer, but I think the OEM manual would be much better.

Thanks again.

Peace.

emp.

Tough to say. Figures were never published for compression. You'll want it to be over 80 and for the two cylinders to be close to each other. Different gauges read differently, plus there are differences based on how you do the test. The important thing is that they are close to each other.

If the outboard is running well, then its compression is probably just fine.
