I have 7.5 Evinrude Fleetwin. I haven't used it in 10 yrs. Won't start. Found a nest of mice in it. Got rid of mice and nesting. Still won't start. I changed the sparkplugs. Put in fresh gas. Any suggestions?

Re: evinrude won't start

Paul and others will be along soon, as as they know alot about these older engines. But, in the meanwhile, check for spark first and then remove and clean the carb out. Make sure you are using the correct oil mix (24:1) or 1 quart of modern TC-W3 oil per 6 Gallons of gas.(about 5.5 ounces per gallon). You will also need to check the points, which are located under the flywheel. Point setting is .020. We can worry about that later if you get no spark. Also, the ignition coils on those wer known to crack and cause the no spark condition. But for now, I would put a spoonfull or so of straight TC-W3 oil in the sparkplug holes and replace the plugs. Turn it over about 10 pulls to lubricate the cylinder walls and rings before you get her going. Then if you have spark, mix up some pre-mix at 24:1 in a spray bottle and shoot a little in the carb throat and see if it fires If so, the carb is clogged and needs to be cleaned. When they sit that long, the remaining fuel in the carb turns to varnish... Best I can do for now...

Oh, yeah. Do you have a Model number for us? Sure helps..

If it had fuel in it when it was put away, you can be fairly sure the carb is clogged. Probably just a jet.
It should be easy to fix. I just did it to a 4 1/2 & it only took me about 2 hours.
Don't forget to put in water or on muffs to start.
Check that it's pumping water. Or better yet change the water pump too. And lower unit lube.

I wont disagree with the advice above, but believe in finding out what is wrong before spending bux on parts, etc. One exception is the water pump impeller. Change it. It gets brittle in storage and is likely to disintegrate and plug up your cooling system if you try to start her.

I agree with Rick about the 24:1 mix to get it running, but you need to determine the year of the engine. If it is a 1963 or earlier, stay with the 24:1 mix. If it is a 1964 or newer, switch to a 50:1 mix after you get her running for a while.

Try the troubleshooting procedures in the "outboard wont start" article in the Engine FAQ section and let us know what you find.

Good luck. :)
