No question here. Just a field test report. When I try a product that works exceptionally well, I like to pass along the info.

After using Pennzoil 2-stroke OB oil many years ago and having a freeking engine disaster, I vowed to use nothing but Engine Manufacturer's oil in the future. I've used OMC oil for 35+ years, with an occasional gallon of Quicksilver.

When I bought a Yamaha new in 2007 I bought some Yamaha 2M. The engine has been a big disappointment all along. Smokes badly, idles rough, starts poor. I happened to talk to an old friend that commented about how poor that oil is, so I googled it and found that complaints were frequent.

Got some XD-50 for a good price, so I drained the tank and made a clean changeover. After 2 tanks, now the motor starts 2nd pull, runs smoother at all speeds and has virtually no smoke.

Me bad for not sticking with OMC in the first place.

OMC does not (did not) make XD-whatever oil. Yamaha does not make Yamalube, Brunswick does not make Quicksilver. All they do is advertize, market and overprice them.

Glad your Yammy is behaving, but don't blame past problems on the oil. Anecdotal "evidence" is just that. . .tales and opinions.

If you mean by many years ago in the 1960's and 70's, then yes, you may have had an issue with Pennzoil. at that time it had a bad reputation for leaving ash deposits. Since that time the product has changed dramatically and is in no way even close to what it once was. So if it was more recent the problem probably lies somewhere else.

While I have experienced huge differences in how much smoke is emitted, plus the odor of the smoke, I have never been able to tell the difference in how a motor runs when just switching between brands. Hard starting and poor running probably have to do more with other factors than the 2% of oil that was added to the fuel.

I have run a great deal of XD50, Quicksilver, Pennzoil blend and just tried a 100% synthetic I got a good deal on. The only difference I see between each brand is the amount of smoke and the odor...well the Pennzoil does form a great deal of goo that oozes from the motor after many hours of trolling (I never see it on the big motors only kickers), but has nothing to with performance.

I didn't mean to imply they made it. They do specify how its made though.

When I had an engine fail, and the mechanic tore it down and called me up and said "Looks like you have been using Pennzoil?", that's enough of an anecdote for me.....LOL>

I didn't start this thread to start an argument, I merely wanted to pass along how good XD-50 is. Ole would be proud!

Boy, yesterday I would have agreed with you. That's why I posted, because I was so surprised.

The motor ran like crap for 3 years. It ran like crap this morning. Then I switched from the Yami tank to the XD tank and it was like night and day.

I beleve you. Been there, done that ... I experimented with multiple brands and oil type ... then chosed the one brand that had the better odor, the less smoke, and made the motor run the smootest. cheers
