Evinrude XP150 - ISSUE Need help

Hello Gentlemen,

I purchased an older bass boat earlier this year. It came with a 1989 Evinrude XP150.

I've run it several times a week since I have purchased it. I've never owned a boat before and this thing screams to me. I hit 53 MPH/5400 RPM on GPS with a turbo jack plate, my brother, and all of our gear/gas on Sunday night. This morning it was sitting next to the dock and I was warming up the motor. I pre-mix all my gasoline for trustworthy reasons, you know why. All of a sudden it just died.

Now on the right hand side of the bulb, the fuel line was empty, the left hand side was hard. The bulb was hard. So I pumped it. I hit the starter and it fired up for a moment then it died immediately. I went back and pumped the bulb and the bulb/primer burst. So I installed a new fuel bulb and fuel filter. I have fuel to the filter. The engine will now only start up and then die.

Is this a fuel pump issue? I think it is. Any and all information would be greatfully appreciated.

If it is a fuel pump where can I buy one?

EDIT FOUND THIS LATER ON TODAY...............

Well turns out I have two fuel pumps in line. The VRO is missing I assume?

I checked and I do have fuel running through the two of them. I am attaching a picture:

The fuel line on one side of the bulb should be hard and the line on the other side should be soft so that's OK.
When you pump up the fuel bulb until it's hard then the carby bowls will be all full of fuel and the motor should run for a couple of minutes.
If it's cutting out straight away I think you're problem is elsewhere.
Did you try starting it & bumping the key in while someone held a small amount of pressure on the bulb?

Well, the fuel bulb is not getting hard at all. I could squeeze and squeeze and squeeze until fuel was running out the intake.

I have 90lbs of compression. Is that too low?

you have eather a leak in the fuel system some were or you have bad carb neddles and seats. For that motor 80s and 90s for compression is normal if the differce between cylinders is more the 10% then you have a problem. Decarb and recheck.

The compression is normal for a regular 150, slightly low for an XP/GT model. Usually these have higher compression heads, yielding perhaps 10 lbs more compression. Nonetheless, 90 lbs is fine-nothing to worry about. An engine decarb may even improve the readings somewhat-worth your time on your "new" engine. Your prior owner has replaced the VRO pump with the earlier (pre VRO) dual pump setup. It should run fine for you. When the engine dies, pull out some spark plugs and see if they are wet or dry. That XP engine has the quickstart feature. When cold, the timing is advanced slightly for better warmup. Would be interesting to know if the engine quits when the quickstart feature returns the spark to "normal" advance. As a heads up, that engine has plastic carb bowls. These all tend to warp and will eventually leak fuel where the bowl face meets the upper carb body. Esp when the engine is tilted or trimmed. It can cause lean running conditions. Bombardier has/had stocked replacement bowl kits for this engine.
