I'm about to buy a 6 hp Envinrude tomorrow, serial number 6302SJ01192 for $150.

The motor starts and runs fine while in the barrel. However, I'm told that under power while on the boat, it will run on both cylinders then one cylinder then the other then both again. Someone has told the current owner that it probably needs the coils replaced. Does this sound logical?

Don't make the same mistake a lot of guys do by throwing parts at a motor. Troubleshoot by finding out what works and what does not. When you get it narrowed down then go to the parts store. Find out compreaaion, spark, fuel, etc, etc.

On the year - post the model number. It contains the coded year.

Thanks... I found out the year is 1973. For those who have had the same problem, any info would be appreciated on what you found. I'm not real mechanically inclined so some direction would be appreciated.

Re: Evinrude's 6hp troubleshoot intermittent cylinders

The first four #'s in the serial # you posted earier would match up with Evinrude model# 6302, which would be a 1973 6hp.

Follow SoLittle's advice and troubleshoot the motor, one of the first steps would be to get a compression test, the compression numbers will give an indication of the internal condition of the motor.

See if you can find out if its losing the same cylinder each time or if its intermitent between the 2.

Check the spark, you should get a strong, blue snappy spark that jumps at least 3/8" I think for that motor, a yellow weak spark would indicate a problem in the ignition system that would require further troubleshooting.

Check the spark plugs, what do they look like? are they fouled? etc.

Hope this helps a little ;)
