Hi. We recently purchased a boat with a mercruiser 4.3L V6 engine. We want to change the impeller and obtain a workshop manual for the engine. How can we find out the exact age and model of the engine. We guess it is around early 90's. We have seen some manuals online for a 4.3L and 4.3LX but the manuals seem to cover 86-91 and 92-2005. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like you are looking at either Seloc or Clymers aftermarket manuals. Those are just a waste of money.
If you look at the adults only sticky at the top of this forum, you will find links to the OEM service manuals there.
First, you have to find what Merc serial number you have.
There should be a metal tag on the back of the block just above the starter with a serial number on it.

Re: Exact age and model of engine?

Thanks Don, this is the info I have found on the Tag,

Model: MCM 4.3L
Engine Serial No: OC856945
Transom Serial No: OD570252
Drive Serial No: OD558119

How can I tell the year from the engine serial number and also what is the transom??

By the way the links to the manauls are great.....or will be when I know the year of the engine!!!!

The engine is actually a 90, while the transom shield and outdrive are early 91
You will want manual #7 for the engine, 6 for the drive.
I used the serial numbers in a dealers program to find the year.
