I would like to know the exact difference between the 270 and 275 outdrives.

I have both a 270 that the cone clutch is glazed and the front ujoint and drive gear housing is stuck, the bolts are trashed, looks like PO had a u-joint fail. I also have a 275 that came off the boat that is pretty well corroded. Im looking to put the upper from the 275 on the mid and lower of the 270. This would be easiest, and im not wooried about the shimming ect as im an aircraft mechanic and have the tools and know how to do the job.

If the 275 has a stronger gearset or whatever i will go through the process of cleaning up that drive. but if mid and lower are identical i could save the work.

Aside from looking at parts lists for the 2 drives does anyone know the differences?

I think i found my answer.
The 275 is a 290 upper on a 270 lower. Is this correct?

The 275 came out between the 270 and 280, long before the 290 existed.
Basically, it's a 280 tilt wiring, with a 270 drive lower unit, and power steering. Nothing with the upper gear box, gears and cone clutch.
