Motor in question is a 1983 Jonny 90 Seahorse V4

Can anyone please tell me what lies beneath the two square covers on each side of the leg?
There seem to be unburnt oil leaking down the leg from under the cowl and from one of the square covers on the housing.
Can I just pop them off, replace the gaskets, and be good to go?
For some reason my(Clymer) manual doesn't address these.
Thanks.
Dave

Yes Dave, just remove the bolts and the covers will come of. There is two covers. The inner cover and the outter cover and of course gaskets. Be sure to clean the gasket surfaces real good and use a gasket sealing compound on the gaskets.

Also, tighten the bolts evenly all the way around. I start in the middle and work my way out using a torque wrench. I go around twice. These covers are prone to leak. I have found that if you get the bolts even all the way around does help.

Hope we've helped.

Thanks OBJ.
What exactly do these cover?
I guess I'll find out when I remove them(just don't want anything falling out when I open them up).

Thanks again
Dave

By "leg" do you mean the mid section? Each cover has 4 bolts? If so, thats where the lower motor mounts are and there is no cover gasket. The rubber mounts just sit in a cavity. There shouldn't be anything leaking from there. And trust me, they will not fall out.

If youre talking about the 2 square covers on the back of the block between the heads, yes those may leak sometimes. And there are gaskets. The inner is the exhaust plate and the outer is a water jacket cover.

Good luck!

HMMMMM....I thought he was talking about the exhaust cover. My mistake!!

You might want to look above the covers and look for any evidence that the black oil may be coming from the lower pan area. A leaking power head adaptor gasket could be giving the cause of the black stuff.

Thanks again guys, and yes Dhadley, I"m talking about the mid section, the square covers with 4 bolts. There's motor mounts way down there huh?
OBJ, I'll check again to make sure it is not coming from above or behind.
There IS some leakage(same oily black gook) from just under the cowl on the side and back.

Dave
