Hello,

I have a 1983 Johnson Sailmaster 7.5. Just finished an impeller and lower unit oil change. Put her in the test tank and I'm getting some steam out of the idle exhaust port. Motor seems to be peeing fine. I am also getting exhaust coming out of the area where the shift lever exits the housing. Is that normal? More noticable right after startup. When I put the boat up for the season in November it wouldn't pee at all. The impeller still had all its blades although 2 were cracked pretty badly. Steamed then too.

I dont have any way of measuring but how hot should the area where the plugs screw in get? I guess they are the cylinder heads. I pulled the cover off while running and inadvertantly splashed a little water on them and it boiled off right away. Is that normal or is the motor getting too hot?

Motor runs and idles well. No problems with it stalling out or bogging like its too hot.

Motor is freshwater only
Any help and comments always appreciated.

Jim

This engine should run at about 143* at idle. You can do a "touch" test pretty easy. On top of the block just forward of the head is a flat place. You should be able to put your fingers there for a several seconds when the engine is warmed up. If it's to hot, you will have to remove your fingers right away.

Could be the t-stat is in need of replacement since you have replaced the impeller.

Just because the impeller still has all it's "blades", does not make it good. The rubber the impeller is made from will lose it's memory after a period of time and not pump as efficently as a new one. Being cracked is an "auto" replace indicator.

For the little bit of money it takes I would replace the water pump and thermostat ang gaskets. You can probably get all that for 50 bucks. Also check the telltale for blockage I also clean the exauhst ports while I have l/u off.
