I bought a boat and maxed out the 40HP rating so I am good there but the rating on the transom is for a 230lbs and the motor is 260lbs.

Help!! How should I deal with this?

That's a darn heavy 40 hp.What kind is it?The heaviest I could find was a 40Etec @ 240lbs
232 manual start. You may have the weight for a 50.
How is the rating listed 40hp or 230 lbs?

Re: exceeding transom rating

where are you getting the max weigth for your transom? If my memory serves me well most CG plates state the hp, not the weight. If you boat manufacturer is still in bussines that will be the place to call.
I think your bigger problem will come from the stress put by the motor hp than the actual weight. However, I wonder if 30 lbs will really cause a problem, is seems to be so little difference when you consider the overall weigth of the motor.
If you could state the make/model/year of the boat someone might be able to help you better. I think you are ok, but maybe someone with more experience can set us right.

Sorry, my bad. Your right, 260lbs was too much.

I checked the weight again its 220lbs, (could have sworn that I checked it twice before, maybe I went to a bad reference).

thanks for catching that error.

Usually, the weight of the crate does not count

Back in the days of the "Fat 60" (one of the successors to the OMC Fat 50 hp V4), knew of a guy who built his own wooden boat (as I did) and mounted a new 60 hp on it. He was a happy camper.

First time out he firewalled the 60 and ripped the transom right out of the boat. Wooden boats will sink.

Gee, That 40 must have one of those new-style lead blocks. My '61 Evinrude 40HP weighed 143 LBS.

I found an 88 Nissan man. 40 at 128 lbs.Thats 104 lbs lighter than a man. 40 Etec.Of course that block also serves for the 50 and 60hp.
