Excess fuel in bottom carb.....hmmmmm

I started my 1976 Evinrude 55hp motor this evening after rebuilding the carbs. I know it needs some adjustments but I noticed two things that may or may not be a big deal. When I pressurized the system there were no leaks..NONE. I started it and seems to be smoother but it is a little quirky at idle, as I am sure the low speed jets will need adjusting a bit. There is some excess fuel in the lower carb in the throat...so that worries me a bit. A drop or two came out onto the air silencer from vibration, but it is not pouring out. I did re adjust the new float on this carb a bit to get it to the correct distance, so perhaps something is not right there...or maybe it is just out of whack too much on idle jets??? The other thing is I notice some moisture in the bowl gasket. Not leaking but is it normal for bowl gasket to absorb fuel? Perhaps I overtightened or is that no big deal??

I was just thinking maybe I have a simple case where the lower cylinder is mis firing....last time I took it out it acted like we lost one late in the day.....may just be a poor plug causing gas to not be used properly...anyway I have the low speed jets at 1-1/2 turns, air silencer is off for now. Will tinker with it some more and post back....

OK....made a little progress here but looks like I need to remove the lower carb....I re-adjusted the low speed screws, added new plugs and it runs and idles pretty well. However after about a minute I see fuel welling up near the mouth of the lower carb...:facepalm:, and a drop or two does manage to fall out while running. When shut off a teaspoon of fuel shoots out. Another teaspoon plus remains inside the carn throat. I would think any excess fuel would simply get sucked into the intake....so I am a bit puzzled here. Maybe I need to re-adjust the float on this carb though...?? Since I can only run the motor on muffs I can't see what it does at high rpms... Running without the silencer as the gasket is misplaced and I am watching the carb...but that should not matter. Any thoughts appreciated.

As you suggsted, check you float setting. I would also remove the needle and check and see if there might be a tiny spec of something in the needle/seat holding it open a tiny bit.

Will do! It does not leak at all when pumped up by hand but I guess the pressure when running is enough to show the problem. We are going to busy until Saturday so it has to wait until then, but I will remove it, d/c check it and reply. Thanks!
