I have a 96 Bayliner Rendezvous 26'. 350 merc with Alpha 1. I had a very tight steering issue last year. It turned out to be the power assist unit. They had to pull the motor to replace. At the same time the rack and pinion cable and steering wheel, bezel and steering gear was replaced. There seems to be aprox 30 degrees of free play (back and forth) in the steering wheel, no mater where I rotate the steering wheel. I had some someone move the steering wheel, in this free area, while I watched the cable at the power unit. There was no movement of the cable at the power unit. I pulled the rubber cap on the rack unit under the dash, I stuck my finger in and felt the gear inside. It moves directly with the steering wheel. So the free play is comming within the cable between the rack and the power unit. I noticed the teleflex cable nut is attached to what looks like a 1 inch treaded pipe at the power unit, Can I make this pipe longer causing the cable to be effectivly longer, thereby removing the excess cable?
