excessive gas consumption

My 1970 Evinrude 60HP seems to be using lots of gas. I drove it WOT a total of 10-12 miles one day and I used 12 gallons of gas. Is this normal. If so, I need to get one large gas tank, instead of the 6gallon tanks that I carry 3 of. If this is not normal, any suggestions on how I can get better gas mileage? Motor runs just fine, no problems there.

Re: excessive gas consumption

It’s hard to say, if you have that 60hp on a river barge then that’s good, if you have it on the proper size boat w/proper prop it seems bad. Maybe give some more details as to your complete set-up (boat and load, prop size and rpms you hitting at WOT) and some more people can chime in with info.
Thanks and happy boating.
I have a 74 70hp on a 17ft aluminum used for fishing, bait tanks 18 gals of fuel, 2 batteries, from I run 35mph at WOT and can get about 12-14 miles out of a 6 gal tank with a 19 pitch prop

As a rule of thumb, an engine will burn 10% of it's hp. a hour in gals. at wfo.
Example: A 70hp engine will burn 7ghp at wfo.

Example 2: A 100hp engine will burn 10gph at wfo.

c/6

Hooty

I was going to tell you what hooty told me, but he beat me to it!

(I still have second thoughts about that 125 Johnson, lol, the one woman bow riding brigade likes to blast along WAY more than fish, lol, something tells me if I am going to get fishing done, its going to be with a drag net designed for high speed trawling, lol)
