Hey Rodbolt and others,

I've been reading about some of the issues on the 'big block' yami hpdi's. One comment that was made had to do with 'excessive trolling'. what is considered excessive? i have a 20-25 min no wake ride to get to open water would that be a problem? or are they talking about fishermen that troll for hours on end?

What were the years of manufacture for the most problematic big block hpdi's?

would any of you buy one now ?

Ideling for 20-25 mins is not that big of a deal, However runnig the Yamaha Ring Free Fuel Additive will help keep the carbon out of the engine and i like the HPDI's and i would buy one anyday if all cks out well and i have a customer selling one now 03 200 hp HPDI if interested give me a shout and oil injection tank and mount comes with it

Re: Excessive trolling definition

and I am opposite, the last engine I would want is a single driver Z200 for trolling.
in fact when I bought my 04 20 seapro it had an 04 Z200 on it with 49 hours.
lucky for me a customer needed a 200 and I sold it for 8500 with 18 months of warrenty left and purchased an F150.
seems the Z200 did not like the hours on end between 1100-1500 that the tuna guys like to troll at.
dead idle wasnt an issue.
but your question was about big-blocks.
we dont use big and small block terminology. leave that for popular hot rodding.
the Z200 was made in a v76* 2.6L block configurtion from 00-05 but the VZ200 from 05 and up was based on the 3.3L block.
the 3.3Lmotors did not seem to exhibit any idle problems as far as plug fouling.
a quick check method, if it has a large finned heak sink its a single driver to the o4 production run 2.6L. after that both the 2.6L and the 3.3L used a twin driver setup.
the 2.6L HPDI used an o2 sensor the 3.3L blocks did not.
the 3.3L blocks used a 6EKU plug and the 2.6L used either a 7ES or a 7EKU depending on ign coil connector color. the VZ may use a 2.6L block and the 6 heat range plugs.
its why the motor has to be positivly identified and the ign coil coil primary connector colors verified.
over the years there have been many changes to the Z Yamaha engines. most the bugs are gone now.
to the question of would I buy one now.
not if I could get away with the F225TLR(sport model) or the F250.

Re: Excessive trolling definition

Thanks Eaves and Rodbolt,

To provide a little more detail and basis for the questions, recently there have been several sets of 300hp hpdi's available and I was thinking of repowering my chris craft 313 scorpion with them.

My use, as I said is that I have a 20 some minute idle to open water, then its up on plane till I get to my destination, usually 30-45 minutes away at 3500 - 4000 rpm.

Do these motors still use the morse style cable for throttle and gear shift or are they fly by wire?

What usually came with the motor besides the wiring harness and remote oil tank sub system ie tach or trim gauge etc?

Re: Excessive trolling definition

make sure any and all the updates have been done, since 06 they can be equipped with either the 6y5 digital gauge package or the 6y8 command link. I prefer the command link.
I would rig them with the 5 gallon oil tanks as opposed to the 2.9 gallon tanks.
about all that comes in the crate is the prop attaching hardware, the battery cables, the steering link on some and the fuel line and primer bulb.
oil lines, tanks, props and gauge package, keyswitches and harness's are all purchased seperatly.
all yamahas that used control cables, for the US market, use the 33 series style cables.
morse makes a lot of styles.
consult the correct year rigging guide for the rigging.
its a 15 min idle for us to water test them so your definatly not in the extended idle range.

Re: Excessive trolling definition

Thanks Rodbolt,

The pair I'm zeroing in on ar 2004's.

I will verify that all updates have been done.

Question: can the compute be accessed for operational history as I'm told mercury's can be? ie hours, whether proper break in was followed, how it's been run, etc?

Prior to 2006 were the engines fly by wire or morse cable?

Thanks once again.

Re: Excessive trolling definition

Just reread my posts and I failed to mention that I'm looking at the 300hp hpdi's made in 2004 as being my particular area of interest. sorry for the oversight.

all the 2 strokes use the 33 series style control cables, currently only the B model F250 the F300 and the F350 are fly by wire.
yes you can access the engine ECU but it wont say anything about breakin.
to access what updates may be needed you will need the engine seriel numbers and a decent dealership that will work with you.
