Excessive white oily substance

I have a 1965 Johnson 4cyl 65 hp outboard. It runs great but when I come back to the dock there is an excessive amount of a white oily substance that comes out of the motor. Once out of the water I can see it leaking out of a small hole on the left side of the motor near the cavitation plate. It smells like raw gas and feels oily. It has got worse since last year yet the motor runs fine. I use semi synthetic oil and all plugs stay clean. Is there a fuel pump vent that would allow this to happen?

Re: Excessive white oily substance

Fishingtime, I had an old Johnson V-4 Outboard. They built a drain into the intake manifold to allow unburnt fuel to drain into the water. In the starboard side of the motor, you may find a rubber hose from the manifold to the midsection.

Of course the reason for the unburnt fuel was bad carburation! If this drain is the source of the discharge, you may want to try and fix the carb. My old johnson would dump 1 gal of fuel into the water out of 8 gal used. I eventually connected the drain hose to another gas tank and collected and reburnt the stuff!

Re: Excessive white oily substance

Thank you Chris1956. I finally got a chance to work on my motor today. I found the line you talked about, disconnected it and ran it into a container. This eliminated the discharge from the motor. I decided to run a line to another tank to collect the discharge. I guess in 1965 when gas was 30 cents a gallon and there were no pollution laws, dumping unburned fuel into the water was not a problem. I will collect and reburn this fuel.
Thanks again, Fishingtime
