Exhaust bellows question

I just had routine maintenance work done on my alpha 1 -- this included new bellows, pipes, and a new gimble bearing etc. The mechanic replaced the exhaust bellows with a straight rubber pipe and not the bellows. I hate this thing -- it's so loud you can hardly hear yourself talk. Also there's the potential for ear damage due to the loud dbls.

My questions is -- can I re-install a new exhaust bellows without pulling the stern drive? Thanks guys

Yes, fairly easily. That exhaust "tube" made that much difference in the sound level at cruising speed w/ the drive trimmed down? I have heard them before and they didn't make that much difference, unless it was being run on muffs.

I can't even imagine how a straight rubber pipe would be even the slightest bit effective in that application. Just not enough give to be a suitable replacement.

In theory there shouldn't be a problem changing it out, but it all hinges on whether he used the right (or any) adhesive. I'd think your first step would be to cut a section of the problematic rubber tubing to give you some room and clearance to pull the ends off.

Hallaluha brother!!! I also HATE those crappy bits of rubbish tubes. Merc used them for a few years to relief exhaust pressure on the bigger engines. Then they went back to bellows shortly after... Wonder why

If you want to do the job properly, you are going to have to remove the drive. Sorry...

Here's some videos to put your mind at ease if you want to tackle the job yourself...

Good luck,
