Exhaust bellows

Help , i have a 1989 5.7 mercruiser with an alpha drive, i am trying to install a new exhaust bellow with out removing drive, my book says it is possible my struggles are indicating that it is next to impossible. Has anyone had any luck with this?

I can't imagine changing the bellows without removing the gimbal housing. with the drive removed, you will then need to remove the trim sending unit and limit switch, this gives you access to the pivot pins that hold the housing on. I soaked my pivot pins with penetrating oil and then used a large allen wrench to remove them,cant remember what size, half maybe. (there are two and merc has a special tool which is like a large allen accept that it has 12 instead of 6 points) if the pins come free then this process is very easy and quick........good luck..

hey folks, i'm also replacing the exhaust bellows and shift linkage bellows. I removed the drive, but got stumped on the bell housing and gimble ring. any useful tips out there?? thanks.
