Exhaust Blockage ?????

Having problems starting a 1988 35HP Force. I'm using jumper cables as the solenoid was bad when I got it. It only wants to turn a quarter turn at a time. Pulled the plugs and it turns over fine with starter. Installed the plugs and tried rope starting (very difficult and quarter turns only). Removed plugs and rope pulled (turns over easily). If I can't pull start this thing, I don't see how I can expect the starter to do much better so I'm wondering if the exhaust could be blocked and what might cause such a thing and if that is common. I've done some searching and didn't find anything so I'm thinking ... not so common.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,
Jake

Re: Exhaust Blockage ?????

Try removing the plugs and squirting about an ounce of 50-1 premix into each cylinder. Open the carb and squirt in a lot of premix, then crank it (without the plugs). This may loosen old oil and reduce compression or internal drag to the point where either the starter will crank it or you can pull start it.

To rope start, you must brace your foot on the engine or the splashwell. The rope does not have the same mechanical advantage as a built in reduction gear pull starter.

For a couple of photos, see my reply in the the next post down: 90 Force-Is it the starter?

Re: Exhaust Blockage ?????

I did try WD-40 before all of this. I will try the fuel mix as well. I don't know the true story of what happened with this engine as it is new to me.

Any problems with connecting two batteries in parallel to increase the available amps?

I'll let you know how the oil mix works.

Thanks,
Jake

Re: Exhaust Blockage ?????

Your jump leads are not thick enough the voltage at the starter is too low ..put some nice thick leads on it and it will crank fine

Do a compression/spark test.Bad compression will cause the motor to do this.J

Re: Exhaust Blockage ?????

The starting problem was the jumper cables. Never would have thunk it. Did a "better" jumper job and it hit on a little fuel sprayed in the carb. Bought the solenoid, installed and fired it up. Seems to run like a champ.

Thanks for the help and info!
