I have a 150 hp force that needs new exhaust cover gaskets and manifold gasket. I know I overheated the engine some but the compression test says the enigine is good all 5 cyclinders test 127 to 120. Do I need to pull the power head off to change this or can I just lift the engine abit to service it and put it back in place? Thanks for the help.

looks like I maybe alone on this one....I'll tell you how it goes...I would have sworn someone has replaced an exhaust manifold and cover before..

Remember it's Sunday.
Not that hard to do.
Before you remove the headgasket.!!!!!
The compression should be around 150# on all 5.
Use a different guage.Same results=bad news.
Spray some oil in the cylinders and do another test.
Post the results.

REmove the head hasket first.Check for damages.
Profile??? Salt or fresh water?
SAlt water could be a big job removing the exhaust side.
Post your results.

Unfortunately, the bottom bolts on the exhaust cover are very difficult to wrench loose. They are down low and close to the lower cowling wall. You would do best by either trying to unbolt and lift the lower cowl to access them OR unbolt the engine mounts and lift the whole smash up a bit.

My buddy has a 150 with the same problem--it was leaking water from the exhaust cover-- He decided it was too much trouble and simply coated the whole area with permatex. Not what I would have done, but he is an impatient man and it did temporarily stop the leak.

I suppose I will be helping him remove the cover in another year or two when the block corrodes and starts to leak again. Of course, then, we will need to drill and tap the corroded bolts that snap off too.

Re: exhaust cover gasket 150 hp force 1989

the battery was weak giving me a poor test reading...I coudln't get to the bottom bolts to torque...this is what i've done so far

1 removed all cables fuel lines and wiring that wasn't attached to motor
2 placed 3 loop headed bolts in flywheel
3 removed upper and lower mounts
4 lifted powerhead and leg with a lift to gain access to these bolts
5 removed bolts in reverse of the torque down pattern.
6 manifold was good...found alot of sand in it
7 chasing the manifold and gasket threads to clean them

thinking running with no stat as the force engineer I met said...maybe with a restrictor in place...this all was caused by some sand blocking the stat...:(

the compression test doesn't worry me the powerehad is new or rebuilt and wasn't cooked i'll retest after I'm done.

Re: exhaust cover gasket 150 hp force 1989

how's it go??? there's always time to do it wrong and triple the time the do it right afterwards....with the powerhead being under a year I was surprised to see the condition on some the these bolts...no wonder they fail and break....the cost of stainless bolts would be well worth not do this again...I sense these bolts corrode weaken loosen up from being so cause a leak and then we break them off trying to fix it....which brings me to ask can I replace bolts with stainless ones and still be okay??? or at least think about changing them and a regular maintence routine..

well after finding out I forgot to get the inner exhaust cover gasket.....I went back to my parts man for a few more things, a thermo stat & gasket, impellor and gaskets for water pump, I flushed the engine up and down found alot of sand resting on the baffles behind the manifold itself...I replaced every cooling part on the motor and reassembled...oh on a closing note my parts person was a engineer for Force when Merc. was making em...they stopped he bid on the remaining parts and won....he has every part you could think of for a force engine even the obsolete ones....
