Exhaust Elbow Bellows for 2.3L 120HP GM

I have a torn exhaust elbow bellows that I need to replace.
The boat is a 1985 16' open bow Stingray.
The engine is a 2.3L 4 cyl inline GM, sn#6916556

Using manual: Clymer Mercruiser Stern Drive Shop Manual,
1986-1989 Alpha One and Bravo One (B742)
(ISBN: 0-89287-454-6)
On page 123 step 11 (for GM inline engine removal) it
describes "unclamping and disconnecting the exhaust
elbow bellows", which is a very hard rubber piece
that connects the smaller diameter exhaust elbow
coming out of the top of the engine with the larger
diameter exhaust pipe. There are 2 circular wire clamps
at the top and 2 at the bottom. This is the reason I think
the part is called an exhaust elbow bellows. This part is
in the rear of the engine compartment, at the same height
as the spark arrestor.

I have tried to find the item online, but the few places
I've found don't show any photos/diagrams, and I want to
make sure I order the right part. I finally did see a
similar looking item in a different thread on the forum:
Inspecting exhause flappers
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=013002
(Exhaust & Cooling.gif)
The part looks like item #60.

I've tried patching the existing part with gasket sealer,
but that didn't hold. I tried wrapping a rag around it,
but the rag got soaked and still sputtered water unto the
engine and spark arrestor plus still chokes me with the
exhaust fumes.

I went to a nearby repair shop, and we found a similar
looking part, but he said it was for Ford engines, not the
GM one, and may not work for me, so he didn't think we
should order it.

So, does anyone what the correct part number is for this
part, where I might order it, and roughly what it would
cost?

Thanks for your help, sorry if I'm not using the right terms
here, this stuff is still really new to me.

This is part of your problem,...........

To the Best of My knowledge,........
The 2.3l motors are Ford motors.........
If you Do have a GM motor,...... It's Either a 2.5l, or a 3.0l.............

And,.........
Mercruiser has Never used the 2.3l Ford motor,......

You part should be readily available......

Ayuh,.....
Right here in Tommays link,.... Part # 32 - 44348, for the "New Style" exhaust,....
And, 70981A 3, for the "Old Style" exhaust.............. ;)

Thanks guys. I'll return to the nearby shop with the updated info and have them order the part. And a couple of the gaskets; I'm guessing I have to acutally remove the elbow itself to replace the bellows.

Thanks again!

Re: Exhaust Elbow Bellows for 2.3L 120HP GM

I've loosened the 4 hose clamps holding the bellows itself, and I am trying to remove the exhaust elbow from the

top of the engine. There seem to be 4 bolts; 2 short ones in the front and 2 longer ones in the back. I've

removed 3, but the fourth one is directly beneath the fiberglass boat decking and seems impossible to reach. Is

this true, or can it be lossened with a box end wrench from behind? (It just doesn't seem possible).

This sits on another thin part, the exhaust adaptor, that is between the top of the engine itself and the elbow. Should I be removing this piece (which includes the elbow assembly) from the top of the engine instead?

Should I cut away part of the fiberglass boat decking to get access to the 4th bolt?

Thanks again for the help.

At http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/collections/index.cfm?fuseaction=collectdetails&colid=04

I have the:
120/2.5L GM 153 I/L4 1983-1989
6229718 AND UP
EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND WATER SYSTEM (USE w/2 PIECE EXH. as far as getting to bolts welcome to good boat building 101

i think i would do pretty much anything to avoid cutting anything that would show after the engine cover was replaced

they make all kinds of u-shaped wrenches and a lot of times i buy one and use the torch to heat it up and make it fit ;)

look around the frameing on the back of my boat doesent look removeable but it is they just hide the screws real good

tommays
