from the way some of the other post's on flappers turned out, I dont know if I should ask.. But, who cares..... I have a 1988 Starcraft Medalist 1901, with a OMC 4.3l, and a cobra outdrive. I am putin in a automotive engine in it and noticed one of the exhaust flappers are missing??? Do these flappers need to be in there??? Would water actualy come back up???

Thanks for any help you can offer, Bryan

That's too funny! :D

Since you read the recent post you must know that there are those who have used their boats for a good number of years with no exhaust flappers. Are they necessary? Evidently not. In fact, I don't have any in my boat either... but like most things in life - the choice is yours. ;)

New flappers are available, and fairly easy to replace. You have a Cobra drive so it has nothing really about the concerns about the stringer drive flappers that have caused a bit of confusion.

Now, heres the problem and you can do whatever you want.
OMC went out of buisness about 10 years ago, they also went into a joint venture with Volvo for a few year, and they used the Cobra drives but put new insides in them that didn't have a dog style clutch, but the much better cone clutch. Still nothing about your question right ;) Well, the transom shield and exhaust system remained basically the same as OMC had on the Cobra drives.
Any way after a few more years Volvo bought out OMC completely. Then, Volvo stopped using the flappers (aka shutters). Found they caused more problems than they were worth. Even had a service bulletin on it. If you want to read it, here is a link to it.
