I was out in my boat today and immediatly noticed trouble idleing. I took the cowling off and predictably it was full of exhaust. Wondering if anyone has any trouble shooting recommendations for finding the leak. oh yeah its a VJ50TLETB by the way.

First place I'd suspect would be the exhaust plate cover gasket/s.

Re: Exhaust leak, any troubleshooting advice?

i pulled the sides off today, and found exactly what i hoped i wouldnt. The leak is coming from the exhaust housing to powerhead gasket. I normally wouldnt have any reservations about jumping right in except the eight bolts holding the housing to the head all appear to be corroded enough to where im sure at least one if not more will strip when i try to take them off. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting bolts like that out. I intend to use both heat and penetrating oil to try and loosen them up as best i can, but does anyone have any recommendations for getting stripped bolts out. Id rather get them out than hassle with drilling them out and rethreading the holes.

I just took the exhaust plate off my 90 horse and every bolt but 3 broke off luckily it was just the heads that broke off so there was some meat left i removed the cover then soaked all the broken bolt with pb blaster let it sit for a while and GENTLY pried up on the plate in between the cover and block as i pried i tapped on the broken bolt to break away the rust after hours i got the plate off then just heated each bolt and slowly removed them with vise grips. GOOD LUCK your gonna need it.
