is this possible?

Friends were out yesterday...temp guage on port engine started reading higher than stbd....180...finding a small exhaust/water leak....coolant from the overflow tube in bilge....no overflow tank installed...A surveyer says it's due to exhaust leak.

Can a small exhaust leak cause an engine to overheat?

Exhaust leak no, but a plugged exhaust that might put enough back pressure on the cooling system enough to leak could. Plugged up manifolds or risers in salt water boats are the first indication it's time for new manifolds and risers once you know the impeller is ok.

Thanks guys. Never heard of exhaust leak causing engine overheat, but lots of things I've never heard of either.

The engines are 318's that have about 50 hrs on the blocks. Freshwater cooled.
