Exhaust leak: Possible locations?

Engine: J225TXESS (1990 225hp)

Fearful of an exhaust leak: Exhaust comes out from under the engine cover.

Have run compression, and there is no evidence that there is a head gasket leak or water entering the cylinders. Engine runs strong, but produces a lot of smoke. Also, exhaust suit noted between the midsection and the gear case.

My manual shows no information on the midsection. I have the diagram of it, but do not have dissassembly/reassembly instructions at this point.

Right now I'm trying to determine where would be the most likely places an exhaust leak may develop?

Thanks

.....or, better yet: Can the midsection of this engine be removed without removing the powerhead, and thus exposing the full exhaust passage for inspection?

Sounds like it might be running a little rich, but I would think if it smokes like you say it does then look for the smoke/soot traces. Is it possible that the exhaust is traveling up the midsection and getting pushed out of the cover? Have you tried running it without the cover and seeing if the leak is visible?

Re: Exhaust leak: Possible locations?

Like all problems? It has changed on me. Last night (running on muffs) she didn't smoke bad at all (same as the other, actually)

Anyway, no, have not run it in the lake with the covers off. Last night in the shop with the covers off, it didn't appear to leak anywhere.

First: with the leak of exhaust between the midsection and the gear case: This water is NORMALLY mixed with exhaust, right? (question) The water mixes with the exhaust and runs out the prop, or am I wrong on this?

Second: In the past, the heavy exhaust smoke was occuring both on muffs and in the lake. Last night I was in the shop using muffs. I'm wondering if the back pressure generated by the midsection/gear case being completely submerged increases the back pressure on the exhaust and is forcing it up the midsection and out on the top?????
