Exhaust pipe temperature

I just replaced my impeller and thermostat and while checking things out (looking for leaks, verifying water flow, etc.) I started the engine on muffs and let it run for a while, about 20 minutes or so, to get everything up to operating temperature so I could verify that the new thermostat would open/close. While I was feeling around everything, I noticed my exhaust pipes (elbows?) were uncomfortably hot to the touch. The risers were nice and cool and the engine temp gage showed right at 160. Effluent water was basically lukewarm and from what I can tell, I had good water flow, and the risers were nice and cool to the touch but the pipes were hot.
Not burning, smelly hot, just hot enough that you wouldn't want to keep your hands on them for any length of time. SWAG at about 160... same as engine temp.

Is this normal?
Keep in mind I'm a rookie and trying to learn, and to head off small problems before they become big ones.
