I have a 3.0 Merc Alpha 1. I just pulled the drive off and pulled the motor out. First I found a broken bolt and it ended up being a starter bolt. Going to get that fixed. Not going to be fun drilling that out. Here is my question. I looked at the exhaust pipe and couplers. I noticed there is no exhaust shutter. I know the pieces are not in there because I checked. There is nothing there at all. Like someone took it out and never replaced. Do you really need the shutter and what does it really do? Its not like my boat sinks or anything. I have had this boat for about 3 years so I have not had a problem. Any answer would be great

Thanks in advance.

Yes , you really need it . It is for when you back off the throttle suddenly and keeps the water when you come off plane will not travel up the exhaust port and into the engine , should I say ruin rthe engine . The broken starter bolt removal will not be bad as it it threaded all the way through . Mkae sure you get the correct replacement and the should be a mount near the front of the starter . Make sure it is there also

Re: Exhaust Shutter

Thanks! I really was surprised there was not one there. That would make sense on why sometimes I get backfire when I stop fast and shut it off. The front bracket is on the one side of the starter. Just don't understand how it broke off and glad I found it now than later on the water and have a problem. Taking motor out because oil pan is leaking and only way to replace gasket. While having it out I am going to replace other gaskets, paint it up, repair anything that could use replacing while I have it out. Thanks again
