1990 mercruiser 454 mag 7.4l v8. I have that typical rattling sound from the shutters. I am pretty new to boating but pretty handy. Can someone tell me how to change the exhaust shutters? I have the service manual but the directions are very vague. I know they are in the y pipe. Is that all I have to replace to eliminate that rattling sound? How do I get to them? How big of a job is it? Thanks!

Re: Exhaust Shutters

Howdy,

The shutters are indeed in the y-pipe just below the elbows and couplings that connect the Y-pipes to the risers.

Once you get the elbows off, you'll see how the pins just slide out. don't drop the shutters down into the y-pipes or you'll be fishing them out. (you may be fishing pieces out anyway!)

The picture is not great but you should get the idea.

Also, that particular shutter type may have been superseded by a newer type.....A Mercury parts guy will be able to tell you from your serial number.

Re: Exhaust Shutters

the shutter may not be the actual rattle noise.... its the metal bar that holds the shutters in.....i noticed in one of mercs bullitens to just add some silicone adhesive between the bracket and the pipe to stop the rattle...
