1974 302/Ford 888 Mercruiser

How much steam if any should I see coming out of the exhaust while running on the muffs? I am getting a considerable amount only a couple of minutes after startup.

Re: Exhaust Steam

no steam at all.Touch it,and it probably only warm.If you can't keep your hand there,it's too hot.
If it 's steam, your hand might not be there, but neither is your engine.

DHP

Re: Exhaust Steam

It could be just vapor....it was about 70 outside while I was running. The water is pretty warm but not too hot to touch.

I figured that it might be a cracked head gasket and I was getting a little water in the cylinders, which may be contributing to my overheating problem.

Thanks

Re: Exhaust Steam

if your getting a little water in the cyl that is a big problem and should be fixed before it does permanent damage to the motor

there is a method in the manual to follow and locate the sorce but i dont have the link right know.

tommays

Re: Exhaust Steam

I am not sure if I am getting water in any of the cylinders, I just thought I might have a blown head gasket since I was seeing right much steam from the exhaust ports on the stern unit.

I will try a compression check tonight, I assume that would let me know about a blown head gasket?

Re: Exhaust Steam

Look at the spark plugs when you take them out. If your getting water in the cylinder the spark plug will be clean, the water and steam will have cleaned the plug down to bare metal.
