Exhaust tube length for Mercruiser 140?

Hello all!
First time poster. My '78 Mercruiser 140, engine serial #3773776, has an exhaust tube. With the leg all the way down, the tube is about 1/2" away from the exhaust pipe on the stern. Should the tube be over the exhaust pipe? I can't find any information on whether there are different lengths of exhaust tubes. As a side note, which could be a contributing factor, the leg seems to not be going down far enough. We JUST get the boat on plane when the leg hits the bottom of its travel. If anyone is sitting at the back, it's hard to get up and there is no way we can over trim so bow is too far down.

Are you talking about the exhaust tube or exhaust bellows?

Exhaust tube attaches to the transom housing and the aft end is connected to nothing.

Exhaust bellows is attached to the transom housing and the aft end is attached to the bell housing.

Both types use bellows adhesive and hose clamps on the transom housing and the bellows uses the adhesive and a hose clamp on the bell housing end.

I can't help with the planing issue.

Is this in a 19?
i’m wondering if you’re waterlogged. If it is a 19 pull the carpet up in front of one of the seats and you will probably see a hole that’s been patched with fiberglass where they put the foam in there. Remove that and see if you’re waterlogged. The boats only weigh 1800 pounds with the motor and Should come up on plane really fast. The problem is usually porpoising.

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,...... When trimmed full down, unhook the aft ends of the trim rams,.......

Does the drive drop down further,..??..?? how much further,..??

Under the boat, at the transom, forward,......
If you hold a 6' straight edge against the bottom of the hull, centered on the keel line, does the hull touch the straight edge for atleast 4',..??..??
If there's space, the hull has a "Hog" in it, 'n it'll never handle properly, til it's fixed,.....

Thanks Bondo! We’ll try both of those, the leg travel then whether or not there’s a “hog” problem... other than the two hogs IN the boat!
