Exhaust water really hot on one side

Why would one manifold and elbow be much hotter than the other. I have through hull exhaust so I can feel the output water easily and one side is WAY hotter than the other. You can feel a noticeable difference when you touch the elbows also. The hot side blows steam when the engine gets warm. Is something cracked or stopped up or what's your opinion?

^^ +1 and will add if you can touch it and do not get burned instantly your probably OK. To be on safe side you can use a inferred thermometer and see what the reading differences are.

There is enough of a difference that no thermometer is needed. It's hot. Not enough to burn but just short of it. If there was a restriction how would I know?

Both of my boats (in signature) have one hotter then the other. After running on plane they kind of even out. Initial idle and/or running on muffs I cannot keep my hand on the starboard exhaust elbow. Now the temp difference between hot and you can keep your hand on it, and hot enough you cannot, can be as little as 10 degrees. Need to pick up an IR thermometer and see what you find, link below.

General Tools Infrared Thermometer with Laser Sighting-IRT206 at The Home Depot

Edit: I do think your OK either way

What about the steam? Normal just from the water and heat or coming from somewhere else?

Re: Exhaust water really hot on one side

Mine has done the same thing as long as I've had it (7 yrs). After a hard run, the starboard side will steam and the riser is always hotter. After years of looking for reasons (removing the risers, looking for bubbles in the raw water line, etc) and reading MANY posts on this, I've come to believe this is the way it is...

The water has two ways out of the engine. The right side or the left side. Water will take the path of least resistance, sometimes leaving one side drier (and steamier) than the other. I've seen quite a few that have this situation, particularly at an idle when you have a very small amount of water pressure. When running the pressure comes up and the flow increases out of both sides barring any major obstruction

When was the last time your replaced your manifolds/risers? I had the same problem last summer and a riser partially clogged with rust...

As far as I know they manifolds and risers are original. I have had the boat for two years now. It steams more at cruising speeds than at idle. Might be nothing just don't want to run into trouble now that winter is finally coming to an end. Been a bad one around here.

Sweet water always. Hard to say where the boat was before I bought it, I doubt it was ever in saltwater.

You always disconnect the water hoses that lead to the manifolds and insert a water hose to both sides to see if you have a restriction with water flow out the risers

Re: Exhaust water really hot on one side

Alright, sounds like I have no problem. I will try the water hose to see how water flows. Y'all have helped me out again. I love being on the water, but not very mechanical unfortunately. Thanks for all the advice.
