well i would like to know if i could run the motor without the shift rod cover. i did today and sheesh that thing sounded so nice. i want to know if there r any problems that might happen. only thing im worried about is no enough back pressure for the water pump is this right? but it was pumping water real nicely.

in florida i read somewhere that every motor must have like an exhaust system. butttttt my motor technically has one just that this other part is open so i dont know

Re: exhuast

it is there to keep water away from the drive shaft. that is why you have a water tube, and exhaust housing.

Re: exhuast

If the rubber donut seal between the inner and outer housings is good, it won't hurt anything but somebody elses' nerves. Some outboards in the older-than-that days had open exhausts. OK, some people liked the noise and some hated it. Those that hated it won, and noise laws were passed. Hey, we used to have Glass Pack mufflers on our cars too. They were outlawed too. You just can't have fun any more.

If you really want to have some sound, take the hood off and fabricate a set of exhaust stacks. That'll bring out the cops, so have fun while you can.

Re: exhuast

im sure there good. but even if i get pulled over i can still say the exhaust is installed on the motor u know cause it still literally is.

lol wow that would be the coolest thign ever lol to have exahust stacks coming out of the motor. wow great idea. but u know if i did that then more stuff would more likely enter the chambers.

but u know sicne most of the exhaust is going out of the that hole now wouldnt i get a better thrust out reverse?

u think that doing this i guess change would do any perforamnce issues? increase acceleration maybe? horsepower. or hurt both?

Re: exhuast

man this thing gets loud!!!1 the motor is right behind me and my ears r like going sheesh this is to loud too sound good lol. i just lvoe it at idle though thats the best thing.

i believe i need to wear ear muffs next time and it will be more enjoyable.

power wise i did notice a bit better acceleration more torque and top end speed maybe i got 1/2 or 1 mph more

i say it was pretty good but my favorite part was having everybody passing by look at me and buggin the fishing guys plus annoying eveyrone;)

I don't know where you are but people get away with that for a while, then the ranger hears them once and they get a large fine for excessive noise. It can get worse if some of the locals have complained to the ranger with hull numbers.

Re: exhuast

ha budddy the hull numbers on my pontoon blend in with the pontoons lol gray with a little outline of black. there readable but just not from a distant but most likely i wont do it anymore cause it hurts my ears. what i rwally likeld about it was that reverse was just sepctacular

in florida r there any rules about that tasha?

Muffling Devices

All vessels must be equipped with an effective muffling device.

The use of cutouts is prohibited, except for vessels competing in a regatta or official boat race and such vessels while on trial runs.

found this on myfwc.com website.

that word effective just ruined everybit of my plans lol oh darn it. i always could go aorund 1/2 throttle or idling around but still is pretty loud lol

i would replace the cover. only 2 screws, then when you want to impress your friends, take it off for a quick trip. i will keep the peace with the neighbors also.

Re: exhuast

For better reverse thrust, you should be able to get a high thrust Solas or similar prop, that relieves the exhaust at the hub, rather than dumping it onto the prop blades.

Re: exhuast

lol very true but man when i ran it with the exhaust cover on i noticed such a great improvment. that underwater exhaust really works. but most likely i wont run it like that anymore but i really liked all that performance increase though

about the prop not sure if it will owrk on my motor? and how much? but really i must admit i really did have great reverse. with that cover off

They'll get you on those registration numbers too. They are supposed to be a contrasting color, and placed in a certain area and spaced properly, and a certain size, etc, etc.

Wanna know how I know? I was with my dad when he got stopped because the FL wasn't spaced correctly from the numbers. He gave the officer some lip and the officer had a tow line on our boat in nothing flat...going to haul us in...literally.

Re: exhuast

where did he tow u? lol ya i they r spaced perfectly and everything i just have to repaint the letters but they r there? lol u know strange thing is that i got pulled over by the cops for having my buddy up in the front standing there while we were techincally under way in which were acually werent under way but tlaked to us just to get on nerves. not sure if he saw the letters or not but didnt say anything about them. most likely im going to get some black paint and just paint the letters over again real carefully

If the boat is a light color the letters must be dark, dark color letters must be light.Letters should be clearly visable against the hull.

Well, I like the quietest motor I can find. I put dual exhaust (with mufflers) on my pickup truck one time----hated it! They weren't loud at all but I found them VERY annoying. If not for the fact that I was too cheap, I'd have had them taken off. I am even finding ways to put insulation under the aluminum cowls of my '50s outboards to make them quieter. I've found the sticky foam that folks put between the truck sides and their campers works well but I'm worried it may eventually break down so I'm looking for something different.
I'm also one of those fishermen that throw a piercing stare at pesky youngsters that come by in their boats with loud motors. I find myself hoping they hit a stump and shear the drive pin so I can QUIETLY continue fishing in peace while they slowly paddle back home.:eek::p
And don't say you keep an extra pin in the boat, Coolguy. I know better!

Re: exhuast

i would do as tashasdaddy recommended and just take it off every once in a while..............dont you remember when everyone had "dumps" on their car?!...........you know you pull what looked like the old manual choke cables and your exhaust shot out of a little extra piece of pipe right next to your headers-----blocked off until you pull th cable of course but pointed down at the ground to give it that nice loud pounding reverberation --------then ROOOOOAAAARRRRR.
