Getting ready to install an expanded volmeter to monitor my house bank deep cycle. Best place is in my cockpit but it involves a run of just more than 10 ft. Do I need to keep it near the battery, which is a short run, or can I run it on out. Group 31 dp cycle with 115 amp hours. I have some 8 Awg battery cable already run and the fuse for Voltmeter is only a 1 amp. Thank RT

10 feet is a short run. 8 gauge wire is overkill for a voltmeter but you certainly won't have any voltage drop between the battery and the gauge. If it were an amp meter it would be a different story.

Like Upinsmoke said, you could use pretty well whatever guage wire you want (not lighter than #16 on a boat). Remember though that it'll need to be fused for the size of the wire & guage (1 amp in this case) within 7" of the battery.

Agree with previous posts. Voltmeter should have almost no draw. Fine with lightest acceptable boat wire (16awg) and fuse near battery. If voltmeter only I would fuse low - 1amp should be plenty.
