Hello,
I just got a 2002 Larson 213 deckboat with a 5.0L Volvo Penta. Teh boat seems to be a heavy boat, but I am not getting the performance that I expected. Does anyone know what numbers I should be seeing as far as a hole shot and a WOT speed? I think that it might have a problem but I want somewhere to start. It has a 14 1/4 by 23p 3blade aluminum prop. Thank you!

The best thing you could do is give what your specs are, Weight, WOT, Speed, Prop size, etc. along with engine type. Carbed EFI as they may have different WOT rpm specs.

I am not sure what the weight is but it holds 50 gallons of gas, current WOT is around 3500 rpm, prop is 14 1/4 diameter 23 pitch aluminum 3 blade, has volovo penta 5.0L carb.

You sound way over-propped. Do you have access to other pitch's to try? A 19 at a minimum, maybe even a 17. Are you near sea level altitude?

We are right about 1000 above sea level. we were thinking about getting a 21P off of ebay and trying that out. I might get a few props to try out. We do not have a prop testing program around here so I found that ebay is the best. Buy some antry them then sell what you do not use. I do not want to take all of the top end off becasue it is already slow (30 to 40 MPH) but that could be because it can not get close to its power band. I think that we might be having some other issues because it sounds like it is cavitating until the stern goes lower and the bow rises. It also has some kind of electrical issue too because we are not getting the same volt reading off of the instrument panel as was are getting off of a volt meter on the battery. Could an electrical issue cause a decrease in performance, or do you think that it is all prop.

How hard should the prop be to turn with the boat off and not in gear? I spun the prop by hand it there was more resistance than I am used to with my other boats. All of my other boats have mercruiser powerplants and they spin very easy like this. You can spin my alpha I gen + and it will go around about once by itself. This volvo penta will almost instantly stop. Is this normal? I have never owned a volvo penta before. I am afraid that there might be something wrong with the outdrive.

Re: Expected Proformance

Boat is 2675 dry weight,5.0 SX is 220 hp,GXIsx is 270.the 220 is listed at 4,800 rpm.
So you have to make up 1300. A 17" pitch should get you there. I think I would varify the motor ia a+ before any changes. Also you should varify the tach is accurate.
If your making 40 at 3500 seems very good or the tach may be lying.

Would an 18P prop sound under propped for this setup? Also what spline should I be looking out for and does the prop have to be a 14 1/4" to fit on the volvo? I am trying to find a prop for it on ebay! Do you think that the sound that sounds like cavitation during a hole shot could be casued by a slipping hub?
