Today coming home in my 1997 expedition all of a sudden lost power steering and the battery light came on so pulled over and the drive belt had shredded. Long story short changed the belt out and now the air conditioner won't blow cold air? Anyone have any thoughts it was working when the belt went and it bows out air just not cold. The compressor won't come on the fuses are fine I wonder if it's something simple god I hope it is we just spent 1300 getting the air fixed in the Lexus I don't want a repeat of that

I'd recheck the belt installation.

Compressor locked up, shredded the first belt and now doesnt work? But if the new belt is on there and compressor pulley spins I'd say no.

Maybe the old belt took out an A/C line or wire when it snapped? Trace everything from the compressor.

With the engine running and A/C on, do you hear and see the compressor clutch engage and disengage?

If nothing else its possible it's had a slow leak for awhile and it finally reached the level when it doesnt cool anymore.

Check into the things I said. If you dont see any physical damage to anything, buy a couple cans of R134A if your state allows and recharge it yourself. It might give you another year, might give you another week, but A/C service is pricey so it's worth a shot.

Yea I called the place where I got the last car fixed and they say most likely what happened is the old clutch froze up shredding the belt...and then broke loose so its still spins...The bad thing is while driving everything was working great...a/c and all until the belt shredded. I will look more closely tonight at any wires or hoses broken but since my wife uses this truck to pick up and haul our kids ill have to get it fixed right away.. I hooked up one of those test hoses on it last night it read 0 on the gauge tried to put a can in it and it went up to the filled part and then back down to around 0 so im sure the most expensive thing that can go wrong with it did.

It doesnt engage or disengage and no water is dripping now.. The belt is on correctly I triple checked it. If i cant find anything wrong tonight in the shop it will go

It's a 5.4l 4 wheel drive and I threw some dye in the air conditioner and low and behold one of the hoses on the bottom has a nice split in it must have split when the belt went and hit it. Bought the truck for 1800 and put about 700 in her and she is a great family car with enough power to tow anything I want. Oh and its Eddie baur so it's got everything you could ask for

I gave mine away at 175K.. It needed more than it was worth, namely a heater core which is a $40 part with an $800 laor cost.

It is a great truck and only thing it needed was oil changes and front brakes.. Wish I still had it.
