I thought I heard on the news (CBS) last night and verified this morning that gas is expected to go to $3.00 per gallon this summer. My boat has 2 gas guzzling 200 hp J/E on the back. I guess I'll have to get something else or change my habits.
Did anyone else hear this bit of good news?

OBJ, They said oil was at $35 a barrell and going up. Supposed to be the highest price since mid 70's.

OUCH !!!

What a great excuse for me to tell my wife I am going to spend the summer in Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez, with my boat.

92/93 octane gas, with no garbage oxygenates added, is about $2.30 a gallon. It's like filling your tank up with gallons and gallons of "Gentleman Jack." :D Not to mention the excellent performance and mileage, except your engine doesn't have a liver to damage. Missing brain cells are another story. !!!

It's about the best gas I've used, since leaded 100 octane, in my old Chevy "409".

..Bob in Calif..

That's the thing about a free market - commodity prices are difficult, if not impossible to project that far ahead. That's why we have a commodity futures market. If you think it will be $3 in the Summer, you buy futures now and make a killing then.

Re: Expensive boating

Could it be the recent weaker US dollar? Its expected to drop more throughout 2004 too.
You'll probably see most prices rise as a result (mostly imported goods)

Price of oil is denominated in US Dollars so I am pretty sure it makes it immune from currency fluctuations. Also, currency is just another commodity and futures trade just like any other commodity. If you can predict the value of the dollar against any currency 6 months hence, please contact me so we can both get rich :D

Well at least they are not out right lying like they did in the 70's and calling it a gas shortage! Thats a plus. And since you can re-claim the (road) tax on the gas you put in your boat, thats another plus.
I haven't hear back yet from the gal who does our taxes if we can or not but thanks to you all here at iboats I at least knew enough to ask.

Link

Ralph,

I guess I was thinking the same thing, but in an opposite way. The US$ has dropped in value, but lets say oil (the commodity) has remained constant. Surely oil's price must rise to compensate for the falling dollar value.

PS-I paid $3. US per US Gallon all last summer for unleaded so quit whining about it. :)

Re: Expensive boating

So let me add the Canadian perspective:

Oil prices are higher in US funds. Canadian dollar is the highest it has been in 10 years.

So gas prices should remain at about the same right?

NOOOOOO!

The oil companies in Canada are using the high barrel prices to gouge the consumer again although the high canadian dollar should make up the difference.

Conclusion: Oil companies are now more profitable than ever. Any opportunity to gouge us (middle east leader has a cold, the president went golfing with the french leader etc etc.)

Glad you yanks get as screwed as us canucks...Brothers forever....

Mellow, people don't laugh at my Festiva anymore! I can still fill-up on $12.00, and run for 2-weeks. :D

Wouldn't want to be in a wreck in it though.
