okay here is the problem. buzz had tried to help before and he did a great job, however he asked for pics which I now have for everyone. My uncle gave me this boat and motor, i'm 23 with a new job and nothing to do after work so my summer project is to get this engine going and boat in the water! The first step ( i think) is to ID the engine. ( I have taken some of the back of the motor off for cleaning) As you can see from the pic the engine top cover says chrysler 115 hp. however the model # (see pic where it is located) = 856X4L serial # 1238. This would indicated that the engine is a 1984 85 hp chrysler. But the 1984 85 hp is a 3 cyl 2 stroke engine. and from what the engine looks like it looks like a 4 cyl 2 stroke 115 hp engine...so I am lost on the first step. ( I need to ID The engine to get the right manual) Experts welcome to chime in :D

This pictures are all attached. Let me know if you would like a different look or view/zoomed in more!

Also guys...the boat has not been running in the water for around 4 years says my uncle, and it did run last time it was in. I have a bunch of work I'd like to do like make sure all the wires are in the correct spot (the colors do not match the wiring diagram but i dont know if this matters) and change the filters, trim tilt, impeller, gaskets, oil change, clean out the gas and all the lines and more. Where should I start? Tips on products and cleaning items would be helpful as well. Thanks guys hope we can keep this a hot post and get this thing going this summer.

Re: Expert needed! With new engine pics!

I was thinking about this one..

Perhaps it is a 115. maybe the lower engine mount was changed out?
I dont think the plate was changed to fool DNR, any DNR worth his salt would know this is to big to be an 85 hp.
Or
It was an 85, but the power head blew up, and swapped out with a bigger unit.

I dont know, perhaps one of the more seasoned users can input,
Do these chryslers use casting numbers on the block?

Yep, definitely a 4 cylinder engine so perhaps the lower cover was replaced at one time.

NOW: The only Chrysler I know of that had twin fuel pumps was the 140. That block has twin fuel pumps but again, they could have been retro-fit. If you are truly interested, pull the head and check the bore. The 140 was a 3.375 (3 3/8 bore) and the stroke was 2.875. Note that the 115 was a 3.375 bore so the stroke length will tell you the actual block configuration. If the bore is 3.3125, then the block is either a 105, 120, or 125. Stroke can be checked through the plug hole.

Yes, there were numbers in the block right next to the top cylinder on the port side, very near the head. If you are lucky, Mercury can tell you from their database and that number, what block it is.

BTW: Those engines are all very similar. If you get a manual for a early to late 70s 4 cylinder, it will probably have all the information you need. Reviewing your photos, that lower unit and midleg are from 1979 through 1984 when chrysler sold out to Brunswick and the name was changed to Force---BUT---the ignition is early Motorola Magna-Power Therefore, 1979 or earlier. SO: Perhaps a different block was retro-fit onto an 85 leg.

Also, look at the carbs--A 140 will have the massive TC 5 or TC 6 carbs. The 115 MAY have the smaller WB carbs.

Does the external coil in the picture indicate a pre-80's distributor ignition?

Re: Expert needed! With new engine pics!

Thanks all! since i'm a begginer at ripping apart engine blocks, i think im going to leave the powerhead as it is if thats a good idea...ALSO I found the exact match for the wiring diagram which is for the- 90, 100, 105, 115, 125 and 140 hp motors with Breakerless Distributor, Type IV ignition, with Motorola regulator/rectifier. I have noticed that the wiring on MY terminal block goes top to bottom yellow, purple, green, orange, red X2, blue, white, black. and on the actual wiring from the diagram is yellow, purple, WHITE, GREEN, ORANGE, RED, BLUE, BLACK. does this order matter at all? and should I go ahead and follow that wiring diagram? I will go ahead and check all the systems for good ohms and resistance.

I can put up some more pics of the wiring inside engine if anyone would like too.

And if you look at the picture of the wires named wiring1 i think, it shows a black lead that for some reason is connected to a bolt on the outter exhaust cover. what is that?

Re: Expert needed! With new engine pics!

Before you go crazy and take apart ANYTHING!!! do a compression and spark test.
Then drain the oil in the lower.Check for water and metal shavings. There is a plug on the BOTTOM of the lower unit not the side. The side screw is for shift linkage and will cause a lot of trouble if removed.Refill from the screws on the side marked fill/vent.Keep filling in one untill it comes out the other then wait and add more.I always fill it the other way too/in the vent untill it comes out the other way.
Tips:Ethanol is destroying old hoses so you will need to replace the soft hoses that are in the fuel system. It doesn't affect the hard rubber ones.
A new squeezie and a diaphram in the pumps.
Ethanol will seperate after a while,2-3 weeks, so add products to help stabilize it.
After you get it running then do a decarb. Good luck,J
