Extend Transom for Long Shaft

I'm having a heck of a time finding a short-shaft outboard with remote steering and shifting. Seems like more of them are long-shaft. As I haven't put built up the wooden portion of my transom yet, I was wondering if I could simply extend it up a few inches to allow for a long-shaft motor to be fitted to my boat.

Right now, the aluminum portion of my transom is 16.5" (see attached picture).

Thanks!
Adam

It's been done here before. Just make sure your "build is solid" and seal the heck out of it with epoxy.

People have done it and eventually find a short shaft and using a sawsall.... cut the transom down to proper height.
