Extending Casting Deck??

my boat's casting deck drops off right behind the front fishing seat. there's probably a 4 or 5 feet after the drop before the consoles. there is a bench seat on either side. im thinking about removing the two bench seats (flip up cushions with storage underneth) and bringing the deck all the way to the consoles. is this a bad idea? people have told me that i could frame it with wood and paint it with glass resin. would wood be too heavy? is there any where that sells plastic that i could use or is there something else that would work better? i am no carpenter but i have a friend that used to build cabinets and said he would help.
