Re: extra power

you'll need another identical engine to your 30hp -same make, model and shaft length-then buy 2 new props with a longer (but identical) pitch. Go to an outboard dealers and ask about it. The ones round your way are quite helpful. Your wife is wrong, it'll make a big difference. I doubt it'll be as fast as if you put a 60hp on your boat because 2x30hp will be heavier but if one engine goes down you'll still be able to get home fairly quick.

Re: extra power

It will make a difference, but hard to tell how much without some actual data that is comparable to your setup. I'd call the boat manufacturer for help, as well as advice like Nos4rs's...

Good luck...

Re: extra power

By the way, performance is an issue here also, steering, planning, trolling, and WOT smoothness...

Re: extra power

Unless you would have a need for dual engines, you might consider selling the 30 and finding a good used 50 or 60 or 75 hp. You might find that the price you pay to "upgrade" rather than buying a second engine is less or not much more than having two engines. Two engines are less efficient in a couple of ways - first, its quite a bit heavier per horsepower, second, it's twice the maintenance. Third, it's a little more complicated installation and set up (dual controls, gas lines, etc.) In fact, my guess would be that a single 50 hp would be similar to dual 30s in overall performance with a much simpler set up. But you have redundancy with duals. But that (redundancy) can be accomplished by purchasing a little 5 hp kicker for a back-up, which would serve you for trolling also. Just a few thoughts. If it were me, I'd definitely check into replacing it with a larger single engine.

PS: I am with the guys who have said you'll definitely see a difference by doubling the HP. No doubt. I'm wondering what performance you're seeing with the 30? Are you getting up on plane fairly easily and able to cruise comfortably on plane without pushing the engines full bore?

I'd agree with you on the kicker D but Johnny said in an earlier post that he wanted to go out to the Eddystone and that area with his boat. It's quite a long way from any port, the tides are nasty all the way out there from his home port and a small hp kicker will take hours to get you home-IF it can cope with the tides. That's why I suggested the twin engine setup. With a 10-15hp kicker a larger main engine would definitely be a better idea, Shetlands 535's go really well with a big motor.

Re: extra power

Aha - his long distance need was not known to me! Yes, that's definitely a good reason for dual engines - and why I had the disclaimer of if he needed the redundancy or not. I'd probably go twin engine, but still it might be worth looking at a single, large main, with an adequately large kicker for back up. Since he sounds fairly "price sensitive" (LIKE ME!), the two options might be worth pursuing, depending on what good deal he can find in a good used engine. Guys I know who have single I/O's and inboards do that.
