EZ drain oil valve

Has anyone ever used a Fram Sure Drain oil valve? It replaces your oil pan bolt with a quick connect female fitting that a hose with a male fitting can plug into for quick draining. My oil change pump broke and I don't want to spend another $45 for one if this will be even easier. What I was thinking was to put the valve in and just run the hose through the hole that the boat plug goes and have a pan there to catch the oil as it comes out! Seems like it would make oil changes faster and easier than pumping forever the old way. Does anyone have any thoughts they can share with me on this?

Re: EZ drain oil valve

Ayah.....
That's sort of how I've been doing it for years.......
Difference being,
My hose is screwed into a fitting on the base,+ the hose is Capped..... Just lays in the bilge til needed.......Then slipped out the bilge drain,+ uncapped to drain the oil......

I can tell you right now,
It's Slow........... Even "Hot" oil is Painfully Slow............
I'm going to fit a pump to the end of my hose to speed things up abit.......

I think it's the Only Way to change oil.........

The Nastiest of the Nasties reside at the Bottom of the Base......
Not wherever the end of the dipstick tube happens to end........... ;)
And,
My Baseplug is at the Bottom of my Base........ :D

Bondo- you are the man... You have answered many of my questions over this last season, and I can't tell you how much I really apreciate it! Thanks for all of the help and advice.

Re: EZ drain oil valve

Summit,
On my old bluewater I have a fram sure drain.
I modified the end with the hose on it with a much longer hose to go out the back of the boat.
It works very well, but like bondo said it's slow.
I usually start the oil draining and then do something else like change the spark plugs and drink a beer.
Listen to what Bondo says I have been on this board along time(mostly reading and learning) and if he has an answer, it's a good one. He helped me through a 4bbl carb swap a couple of years back and helped me pick out a cam for when I get around to rebuilding the engine.
Good luck

There is another brand called Fumoto that is of higher quality than the Fram -- but, more expensive. It actually has a lever on it vs. the hose actuated drain that the Fram has.

Overton's sells one that replaces your drain plug, has about 4 foot of hydraulic hose, and is capped at the end. About $30, I think. Works great on my rig.

Just a thought or two.
admittantly I have never seen one of these hoses fail, but I do worry about starting an engine with the oil drained out of it.(if a hose leaked)

My suggestion.... run the motor to warm the oil.Use the MC hand pump and suck the oil out.Pull the drain plug, and you won't see more than 2 ounces.
DHP

Mine is of the design stated by ddboater,
A brass fitting into a High Pressure Hyd.(3,000psi working pressure, 10,000 burst pressure,+ it'll Never see Any Sunshine) line, with a brass cap on the end..........
I'd be More Concerned that the Base Rots Out before that line Ever gives up............
Ayah,
And, That 2 ounces Is the "Nastiest of the Nasties"..........
That's the 2 ounces I want to end up in the Drain Pan..................... ;)

Re: EZ drain oil valve

Use a 8 mill trash bag. Slide it under the motor and pull the drain plug. Let drain, pull a corner of the bag up under the oil filter and take it off (drippings fall into the bag also). Put the plug in and new filter on and pull bag out of the bilge. The reason I use a bag is you can not a drain pan under the motor. I used to use a pump but like said before you cant get all the oil out “And, That 2 ounces Is the "Nastiest of the Nasties"..........That's the 2 ounces I want to end up in the Drain Pan”. Also a pump will not pick anything bigger then the tube you slide down the dip stick. After a rebuild there is always something (gaskets chunks, sealer etc) that fall into the pan. That is why I started using a trash bag.

Re: EZ drain oil valve

i got one of them on my IL6 too. haven't used it yet as i have a siphone pump. good point about the sludge and not getting that with a vac. pump. will say that i seem to have to continue to tighten my hose that replaced the drain plug as it cronicly gets loose and leaks in my bilge. have no idea who made it. jim

Re: EZ drain oil valve

The bag sounds like a good idea. I think I will use it instead of borrowing a hand pump (mine broke) so I can put in the drain valve. You have to have hell trying to dump oil from a bag in the recycle bin!
I appreciate all of the advice from everyone!

Two ounces of nasty won't bother me as I am adding 160 ounces of new oil. With a decent change interval,it isn't that nasty, either.
DHP

Re: EZ drain oil valve

I pull the barge, tilt it up, drain the pan and filter in the bilge, let it run into a pan, and milk jug to the recycle. Then the block gets dumped, and that goes to Hazard wastehouse. Leave a pan or tape a bag/diaper under the drain plug for a few days, spray a little Simple Green in the bilge, and a decent wipe and good as new. Main thing on the last 2 oz, is if you didn't get that oil hot enough to boil out the water vapor, it will collect on the bottom of the pan over the winter, and rust inside out (or possible anyway). I would hate to pull a motor just to replace a pan. I would say its okay to do a mid-season oil change through the stick though.
