I have one of the transom mounted adjustable auxillary motor brackets on my boat. It is aluminum and wood, I am going to be rebuilding the wood part which is where the motor clamps to, It appears that it is about 1 1/4 thick right now and just a piece of wood. Iam going to cover the one that I make to replace it in fiberglass. I am wondering what type of glass would be best for this and the order I should lay it on I don't think I need the fiberglass for strength as there is nothing on the current piece of wood on there, mostly just for water proofing so I think all csm should do but I am open to opinions and suggestions and I would be curious to how many layers to do. It mounts to the adjustable aluminum part by four bolts and just wondering if I should drill these four holes before I do any F/G and somehow line the holes with F/G as well. I have a very dry 1/4inch piece of quality exterior ply that I would like to use however this would require me glueing together 5 or 6 pieces to get the thickness would this be ok for something like this? I hate to have to buy a thick piece of quality ply when I have a nice dry quality piece sitting aronud. Thanks in advance for any advice and tips.

Re: F/G Question

Ayuh,... In that application,... I'd Oil the wood with lynseed oil, or varasol, or Valoil, or,...

You need the wood exposed so the motor can get a Bite on it....
Clamping the motor to a stiff glassed piece will either Slip, or crack the glass...
If the motor Slips, you could loose it...
If the glass cracks, it allows water in, but it can't get out... It'll rot Quicker...

Re: F/G Question

Interesting glad I didn't just go ahead and do it then, is there application techniques for applying the oil? Coats? Time between coats?
