F/Glass Repair inside or outside of hull?

Hi,

Because of the excessive weight (15 Kgs) of the stern rudder on my boat, a section of the stern had cracked and rotted where the rudder's pintle and gudgeon bolted thru the hull. I have cut out the cracked section in readiness for a fibreglass repair job (see photos), but can't decide if it would be better to do the repair from the outside or the inside of the hull. There is plenty of access either way. I intend also to strengthen the stern by giving it more thickness in that area and will make a lighter rudder. Would working from the inside give me a stronger repair?

And also can someone tell this dumb bunny how to make a new thread title in "Bold" lettering please?

P.S. The rectangular hole at the top was where the tiller handle originally went thru. I will be repairing that as well and then cut a new (and neater) hole in it's place.

Repairing from the inside is the best way to go. Of course you'll have a good bit of fairing work on the outside too. Cover the hole with some stiff plastic and a backer for it (You just want to keep the repair from falling thru the hole) Then you can begin the repairs from the inside.

Both inside and out, do most of the repair (Build up) on the inside, then grind down the outside and add a layer or two of mat.

Yep, inside outside. Get some 1/4" fiberboard and cut a piece big enuf to cover the hole. Give a Generous coating of Furniture wax and then Duct tape it to the outside. You need to grind the glass back about 8 to 10 inches all around the opening and feather it in to the hole to a razor edge. Build your patch by cutting pieces of biax cloth in progressively larger pieces starting with the first piece to be the exact size of the hole and then each succeding piece 1" bigger than than the last. Do this until the desired thickness is reached. Build the patch on a piece of WAXED fiberboard cut to the size of the sanded area you can then saturate ALL the layers at one time with resin, paint the sanded area with resin, then lift the board patch and all and PASTE it right on the hole duct tape it in place and in 30 mins, IF you waxed the board good enuf, you can peel it off and start fairing and sanding. You can then recut the hole. That's how I would do it.

This Video Might give you some ideas.

Okay add a layer of matt on the outside too, so everyone is happy.
